Chapter 23

The early part of the day had been packed with tests on Karen’s breast area. She was left feeling worn out for the afternoon. She tried to shut down and feel sorry for herself, but Big Mama wouldn’t allow it. She continued encouraging Karen and to boost her spirit.

“Ms. Emma, I’m sorry to see you go home. It’s been such a blessing to have someone to talk to.”

“I’m glad I was here with you. Don’t think you were put in this room by accident.”

Karen remembered how much she had complained about not having a private room when she first arrived. Thank goodness she’d ended up with Ms. Emma.

“God made a way for you to be put in here with me. Now I’m going home, but I’ll be back to check on you young lady. Reckon I’ll get some of the folks from church to come with me.” Mother Walker slowly approached Karen and patted her hand. “I’m coming to see you, and I’ll be keeping you in my prayers.”

“Ms. Emma. I appreciate your kindness.” Karen admired her spiritual walk. “Could you please pray for me before you go?”

“Yes, ma’am. I don’t turn down a chance to go before God on behalf of somebody.”

Karen wasn’t feeling too good about praying, but found herself embracing the words of Ms. Emma.

When Karen was alone, time served in the hospital was slow and boring, especially with the church mother gone. Karen drifted in and out of sleep the rest of the afternoon and into the evening, allowing time for a few bites of food.

She wasn’t expecting to see her family this afternoon. So, it was a special treat to wake up and see the girls coming through the door with their daddy close behind.

“Mommy,” Elizabeth shouted, and anxiously ran up to Karen’s bed.

Karen placed her index finger to her mouth and said, “Shhhhh.”

Elizabeth had waited several days to see her mom. She’d finally arrived. Karen might get her to pipe down verbally, but her excitement was staying.

Chelle greeted her mother with a calmer, more controlled expression.

Karen spread her arms wide in a gesture for the girls to give her a hug. They responded without a spoken word and fell into their mother’s arms. Having them close to her heart gave Karen comfort. It was the best medicine she’d gotten all day.

“How are you feeling?" Johnny asked. He found a chair in the corner of the room.

Karen nodded.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I’m doing okay. I’m a little tired, but I’m feeling better with my family being here.” Karen brushed Elizabeth’s hair back and gave her a kiss.

It was an awkward visit for the couple, since they hadn’t been on the best of terms when Johnny left for the business trip a few days ago. Neither had made amends before Karen got sick and went into the hospital. Now they were stuck making small talk for the benefit of the girls.

“How are you making out at home?” Karen asked the girls.

Chelle was able to get a word in before Elizabeth.
